Wind Energetics

WIND ENERGETICS

1. EDUCATIONAL GOALS OF THE SPECIALITY

The speciality “Wind Energetics” is referred to the professional direction 5.4 Energetics of the Governmental classifier for high education and professional directions. The present annotation of master degree course defines the professional function of the specialist, the common requirements to his preparation and skills, as well of his professional realization.

The speciality objectives are the creation of specialists to avail themselves of innovation in the field of modern technologies in wind energetics and to implement the concept of sustainable development for science research and practical business purposes. The graduates will be able to create projects and devices to utilize the wind energy and will realize them using advanced technologies. The main goal of the “Wind Energetics” course is to educate the students for gaining of practical skills. They will be gained during the course working on projects and during the master thesis - working on practical and applied themes.

The graduated engineers in the speciality “Wind Energetics” must be prepared to do the following:

  • To apply engineering solutions of problematic aspects in the area of the Wind Energy; to
  • use the appropriate methods of modelling, simulation and optimization of different Wind Energy Systems.
  • To analyze and evaluate from the point of view of energy, economy and construction the projects of wind and conventional energy sources systems and exploitation, to plan and make research in this area;
  • To work in teams solving problems of interdisciplinary and international character within the framework of particular political and economical conditions;
  • To apply the theoretical knowledge and practical experience in solving practical problems.
  • To form goals and strategies, to work out plans, programs and projects;
  • To take part in elaboration of company, regional and national energy strategies;
  • To realize useful contacts with their partners in Bulgaria and abroad;
  • To plan and organize effectively their own career;
  • To use independently varied scientific and practical information sources.

2.REQUIREMENTS TO THE PREPARATION OF THE SPECIALIST IN WIND ENERGETICS

The graduated must receive thorough schooling in the field of the design, building and exploitation of the systems to yield electricity from the wind, to acquire research based competence in the wind energy subject, to acquire knowledge of fundamental theories and methods used in the subject, to attain theoretical and practical skills required for wind turbine planning and design, to develop technical skills relating to the design, analysis, specification and evaluation of complex wind turbine projects.

The candidates must be graduated as bachelors with higher technical education. It is not obligatory that the candidates graduated the specialty Green Energetics (bachelor degree) at the European Polytechnical University in Pernik, but they must have bachelor degree in engineering field.

The special preparation of the engineer in “Wind Energetics” must include considerable knowledge on the following engineering subjects: Wind generators, Computational fluid dynamics and dynamics of structures, Wind turbine design, Electric machines in wind energy conversion , Wind electric generation schemes, Management system of a wind energy supplier, Monitoring, control and diagnostic of the wind generator, Experimental data- measurement methods, treatment and errors reduction, Environmental impacts of wind technology, Ecological requirements in build up process of wind generators and European legislation.

The elective subjects give the students the opportunity to receive additional specialized knowledge in the desired flied. The course provided the following disciplines: Masurement and certification ; Wind resources and loads on wind turbines; Introduction to numerical modelling of wind turbine structures; Optimization methods; Aeroelastic design of wind turbines, Design and manufacturing of wind turbine rotor blades; Composite materials for wind turbine rotor blades; Wind farm design-normatives and optimization.

3. SKILLS AND PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE OF THE SPECIALIST IN WIND ENERGETICS

The graduated in the specialty “Wind Energetics” must possess thorough knowledge in the contemporary management and economic theories, specificities of the energy management, European policies and standards, national and European patent law and defense of the intellectual property as well of the methods for forming and realization of strategies, energy business plans, programs and projects.

The graduated in " Wind Energetics” will be in possession:

  • To work in teams solving problems of interdisciplinary and international character within the framework of particular political and economical conditions;
  • To apply the theoretical knowledge and practical experience in solving practical problems;
  • To apply engineering solutions of problematic aspects in the area of the Wind Energy ; to use the appropriate methods of modelling, simulation and optimization by different Renewable Energy Sources;
  • To analyze and evaluate from the point of view of energy, economy and construction the projects of wind and conventional energy sources systems and exploitation, to plan and make research in this area;
  • To plan and organize effectively their own career;
  • To use independently varied scientific and practical information sources;
  • To form goals and strategies, to work out plans, programs and projects;
  • To take part in elaboration of company, regional and national energy strategies;
  • To realize useful contacts with their partners in Bulgaria and abroad.

4. REALIZATION FIELD OF THE GRADUATES IN WIND ENERGETICS

The graduates from the master degree “Wind Energetics” are needed experts in a very well- paid branch. They can realize themselves as professionals in various fields of energetics (and in particular in the sphere of the Renewable Energy Sources and the Energy Efficiency) as:

  1. Designers and constructors of electrical energy systems;
  2. Scientists and lecturers;
  3. Representatives at state and municipal administrations and at non-governmental organizations;
  4. Leaders of wind management platforms or wind farms.
  5. Private entrepreneurs.
